About Rome and Lazio

Rome is one of the world's great cities, and the quiet Lazio countryside beyond it, Etruscan towns, papal gardens, and volcanic lakes, is what most visitors miss.

About Rome & Lazio

Rome is one of the world's great cities, layered with almost 3,000 years of history, and Lazio, the region that surrounds it, is the quiet countryside that most visitors never reach. Beyond the capital lie Etruscan hill towns, Renaissance water gardens, volcanic crater lakes, and a coastline once favored by Roman emperors. For guests who want the monuments of Rome alongside vineyards, gardens, and the sea within easy reach, few parts of Italy offer a richer combination.

How to Get to Rome and Lazio

Rome Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci / FCO) is the main gateway and one of the busiest airports in Europe, with direct intercontinental flights and a fast train link to the city. It sits approximately 30km / 19 miles from central Rome, roughly 45 minutes by car, and is the natural arrival point for the whole region.

Rome Ciampino (CIA) is the smaller second airport, approximately 15km / 9 miles southeast of the city, roughly 40 minutes by car, and convenient for the Castelli Romani and the south.

From Fiumicino, driving times to the countryside run to roughly 1 hour for Tivoli and the Castelli Romani, about 1.25 hours for the Tuscia countryside around Tarquinia, and about 1.75 hours for Viterbo and northern Lazio (approximately 100km / 62 miles). The southern coast around Sperlonga and Gaeta is about 2.25 hours (approximately 135km / 84 miles). Rome is Italy's central rail hub, with fast trains reaching Florence in roughly 1.5 hours and Naples in about 1 hour. A car is essential for the Lazio countryside and coast, though not for the city itself, where it is more hindrance than help.

Where to go in Rome and Lazio

Rome
The capital needs little introduction: the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Vatican with St Peter's and the Sistine Chapel, the Baroque theater of the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona, and the tangled lanes of Trastevere. It rewards both the guest seeing the icons for the first time and the returning visitor content to linger in a single neighborhood, a gallery, or a long lunch. Many guests give it several days at the start or end of a trip, while others make a Rome apartment their base for the week.

Tivoli and the eastern hills
Roughly 30 minutes east of Rome, Tivoli holds 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites: Villa d'Este, whose terraced Renaissance gardens are a theater of fountains, and Hadrian's Villa, the vast country retreat of the emperor Hadrian. Beyond, the Aniene valley and the Sabine hills climb toward Subiaco and its cliffside monasteries, through olive groves that produce some of the region's finest oil.

The Castelli Romani
On the volcanic hills southeast of the city, the Castelli Romani are the towns where Romans have always escaped the summer heat. Frascati is known for its crisp white wine and patrician villas, Castel Gandolfo for the papal palace above Lake Albano, Ariccia for its porchetta, and Nemi for its tiny crater lake and wild strawberries. It makes an easy, green day out from Rome.

Northern Lazio and Tuscia
North of Rome, the area known as Tuscia is Etruscan country and among the most underexplored corners of central Italy. Viterbo is a medieval papal city with thermal springs; Cerveteri and Tarquinia hold Etruscan necropolises listed by UNESCO; and Civita di Bagnoregio, reached only by a footbridge, clings to a crumbling pinnacle of rock. The Renaissance and Mannerist gardens are remarkable here, from Villa Farnese at Caprarola to Villa Lante at Bagnaia and the surreal stone monsters of the Sacred Wood of Bomarzo, while Lake Bolsena and Lake Bracciano offer swimming and lakeside towns. The countryside around Tarquinia, within reach of both the Etruscan sites and the Tyrrhenian coast, is where guests who want a rural base rather than a city apartment tend to stay.

The southern coast
Lazio's southern shore, the Riviera di Ulisse, runs from the dunes of the Circeo National Park down past Sabaudia to the whitewashed cliff town of Sperlonga, where the emperor Tiberius built a seaside villa around a natural grotto. Gaeta, on its promontory, has fine beaches and a medieval quarter, and the whole coast fills with Italian families through the summer. It is roughly 2 hours from Rome, a long but rewarding day for guests who want a stretch of coast and a seaside lunch.

The Pontine Islands
Off the southern coast lie Ponza and Ventotene, small volcanic islands reached by ferry and beloved by Romans in summer. Ponza is the larger, a crescent of pastel harbor houses, sea caves, and swimming coves; Ventotene is quieter and steeped in history. In summer they make a memorable day out by boat for guests drawn to the water.

When to go to Rome and Lazio

The best time to visit Rome and Lazio depends on what you are looking for, but the city works in any season, with spring and autumn the most comfortable for sightseeing and summer bringing long, warm evenings and the headline sites at their most alive.

Spring is a favorite in the city: April and May bring warm days, blooming gardens, and wisteria over Rome's courtyards, with Easter week the one busy stretch to plan around. Summer is warm and full of long, light evenings; July and August see the monuments at their liveliest, and while the middle of the day is hot, the early mornings and late evenings are made for the city. Around the August holiday of Ferragosto some Romans leave town and a handful of restaurants close, which gives the streets an unusually calm, local feel. Autumn rivals spring, with mild days, the grape and olive harvests in the countryside, and thinner crowds at the major sites. Winter is quiet and often mild, ideal for guests who want Rome's museums, churches, and restaurants with room to breathe.

Why Visit Rome and Lazio

Few places pair a world capital with countryside this quiet and this close. A morning in the Roman Forum, an afternoon among the vineyards of the Castelli hills or the Renaissance gardens of Tivoli, and a villa near the Etruscan coast for the evening: the region gives guests the icons and the calm within a single, compact area. Rome is a world capital, and its finest hotels are priced accordingly, but the Lazio countryside just beyond sees a fraction of the visitors of Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast, at a fraction of the cost.

The food is Roman to its core. The city's tables run on cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana, and coda alla vaccinara, on artichokes done alla romana and alla giudia, and on saltimbocca and porchetta from the Castelli hills, washed down with Frascati whites and the increasingly serious Cesanese reds of the interior. Add the greatest concentration of ancient monuments in the world, the papal and princely villas of the Renaissance, and a coastline of grottoes and dunes, and the region rewards a week as easily as a long weekend.

In Rome, the difference between a good visit and a great one comes down to access, and that is where the Essenza Escapes network earns its place. Private entry to the Vatican Museums or the Colosseum outside public hours with an expert art historian, Roman cooking lessons and market walks, private visits to the gardens of Villa d'Este, Villa Lante, and Villa Farnese, tastings at Frascati wine estates, Etruscan tombs opened by the archaeologists who study them, and, in summer, boat days along the southern coast. The guides, cooks, and hosts in the Essenza Escapes network here are among the most knowledgeable in Italy, and it shows in the doors they can open.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to visit Tuscany for a villa holiday?

May, June, September, and October are the strongest months for countryside, wine, and cultural visits — mild temperatures, fewer crowds than peak summer, and the landscape at its most alive. Late July and August are the warmest months, ideal for guests who want the pool and the coast; Florence rewards early morning and evening visits during this period. November to March suits guests focused on Florence and the cities, when the Uffizi is at its most accessible and the hilltowns feel genuinely themselves.

When is the best time of year to visit Rome and Lazio for a villa holiday?

Rome is a year-round destination, so the honest answer is that it rewards a visit in any season. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for sightseeing, with warm days, blooming or harvest-season countryside, and crowds that stay manageable at the major sites. Summer brings long, warm evenings and the headline monuments at their liveliest; the middle of the day is hot, so mornings and evenings are the time to be out, and around the August holiday of Ferragosto the city takes on an unusually calm, local feel. Whatever the season, Essenza Escapes can match the timing to what you most want from the trip.

Which airports serve Rome and Lazio, and how far are they from the villas?

Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is the main gateway, with direct intercontinental flights, roughly 45 minutes from central Rome and around 1 to 2 hours from most of the countryside. Rome Ciampino (CIA) is the smaller second airport, about 40 minutes from the city and well placed for the Castelli Romani and the south. From either, the Tuscia countryside around Tarquinia is roughly 1.25 hours and the southern coast around Sperlonga about 2.25 hours. Essenza Escapes can arrange private transfers from any of these airports.

Do I need a car to explore Rome and Lazio?

You need a car for the countryside but not for the city. Rome is best explored on foot and by the occasional taxi, and a car there is more hindrance than help, but the villas, vineyards, Etruscan towns, lakes, and coast of Lazio are spread across the region and not well served by public transport. Guests who base themselves in a Rome apartment rarely need a car until they move out to the Tuscia countryside, where a car or a private driver makes all the difference. Essenza Escapes can arrange car hire or a private driver from any Italian airport.

When do tickets for Rome's major sites go on sale, and can Essenza Escapes help me get them?

Tickets for the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums are released only a set period before the date you want to visit, and the most sought-after slots often sell out within hours of going live. This catches many first-time visitors off guard, since you cannot lock in a day months ahead the way you can with flights or a villa. Essenza Escapes tracks the release window for each site and books the moment tickets open, so the key visits of your trip are secured rather than left to chance. Handling this before you arrive is one of the details that makes the difference between a smooth week and a scramble for entry.

Can Essenza Escapes arrange private access to the Vatican and Rome's major sites?

Yes, and it is one of the things guests value most, given how crowded the headline sites have become. Essenza Escapes can arrange private tours of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel before the public doors open, early or evening access to the Colosseum and Roman Forum, and guiding throughout by art historians rather than standard group leaders. The same applies to the Borghese Gallery and other sites that cap numbers or require reservation well in advance. Seeing the Sistine Chapel in near silence, rather than shoulder to shoulder at midday, is a different experience entirely.

Is there enough to do beyond Rome, and what can Essenza Escapes arrange in the countryside?

A great deal, and it is the part of the region most visitors miss. Within 1 to 2 hours of the city are the Renaissance water gardens of Tivoli, the Etruscan tombs of Cerveteri and Tarquinia, the papal villas of Tuscia, the Frascati vineyards of the Castelli Romani, and the volcanic lakes and coast to the south. Essenza Escapes can open private garden visits, arrange tastings at Frascati and Cesanese estates, and bring in the archaeologists who study the Etruscan sites to guide guests through them. For a region so close to a world capital, Lazio stays remarkably quiet and remarkably good value.
